Cultural New Zealand

Maori are the accepted indigenous people of New Zealand and due to the signing of The Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 with the British they have had a partnership with the government. Maori and English are official languages as well as NZ Sign Language. New Zealand has a population of 4.3 million of which 14% are Maori, 9% Asian, mainly of Indian and Chinese origin.

If you want to have a cultural experience in New Zealand you can book a tour to see a Maori village. The best time to visit would be the end of February and early March as this will be when you can “see the Chinese New Year in” by attending the Festival of Lanterns in Auckland. It is held in Albert Park over a week-end. This is one of the high lights in the Auckland calendar. There are many hotels to choose from in Auckland.

7% of the population have Pacific Island origins. Most of the European influence is British and many still have roots or family in the British Isles and many of the Polynesians have family in the Islands like Samoa, Fiji, and Tonga. There are huge festivals to celebrate the diversity of the different people groups. The high-light of the year for the Pacific community is the Polyfest. It is the biggest Pacific Island and Maori festival in the world. There are usually over 200 groups that compete from over 60 high schools from the Auckland region. If you enjoy seeing cultural groups perform synchronized dance and singing, this 2 day festival is a must for you. You will see groups performing from communities like; Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Fijian, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Sri Lankan, Malaysian and many other ethnic groups. Accommodation near the airport in Auckland is good for this event.

Plan to visit at the end of February and early March so you can see these festivals. Visits to the Maori cultural centres in Rotorua are available all year round. The weather is also great during these months.

Rugby in New Zealand

What all visitors to the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand need to realize, is that through the press and the TV there will be many articles that will talk about how the security may not be good enough, or that the price of hotels are too expensive or that the stadiums will not be completed on time. This is done so that you, the potential fans that will be flying from all the countries that have teams coming to play for the coveted World Cup Title will read, listen to and watch every bit of news related to the 2011 Rugby World Cup. There will be hundreds of articles, pictures and TV programs made in the next year that may alarm you as the media high-light all the small issues and blow them up to make a story to gain interest and hype and make sure their newspaper, magazine, radio or TV channel try to gain your eyes and ears and following.

The Rugby Stadiums will be completed.

All this issues of security, accommodation, flights, stadiums and car rentals etc will be sorted out. All the big events like the Olympics, World Series, Football (Soccer) World Cup and Rugby World Cup have the build up with alarming stories about all the things that can and will go wrong. All these issues get sorted out before the games begin. Fans and visitors need not be alarmed about these stories. New Zealand is well able to cope with the Rugby World Cup in 2011. You will have the time of your life and for many visitors this will be the first time you are traveling to New Zealand and if the recession doesn’t end quickly it may be a the last time you will visit this beautiful paradise.

Tips if you are Flying to the 2011 Rugby World Cup

• Make sure you have booked your flight early.
• Ensure you have included a stop over along the way unless you are traveling from Australia or one of the Pacific Islands of course. New Zealand is far from anywhere do your body a favour and break your flight on some tropical or exotic island – like Fiji or Singapore
• Get your passport and other documents organized early, start now.
• It is colder than you think in New Zealand. Make sure you have warm clothes.
• The people of New Zealand in spite of the fierce looking haka are very friendly and approachable. When you are here ask anyone for help, directions or information.
• Electronics are expensive in New Zealand buy any photographic or iPods etc before you leave or on the way in places like Singapore, Bangkok, or Australia.
• You have to go to the South Island. If you are coming all this way. Milford Sound and Queenstown are a must. And Rotorua and Auckland on the North Island.
• Only get a vehicle if you are going to have a lot of time. The roads in New Zealand were built 40 years ago when cars did not travel at 100kms per hour. It takes forever to travel around. Fly. Fly. Fly.
